Is it possible to avoid “probate”?

Certain assets pass outside of the probate process. Examples include joint bank accounts with right of survivorship, accounts which are “payable on death” or “P.O.D.” to a named beneficiary, life insurance policies or retirement investments which are payable to a named beneficiary, and real property owned by “joint tenants with right of survivorship and not as tenants in common”.
